How to Meditate Successfully

We all know that meditation is great for you, but how do you meditate? In this article I want to give you some suggestions of what you need in order to set-up a successful meditation practice, and I will also teach you how to meditate. These peripheral parts of a meditation practice should not be ignored, as one of the most important aspects in order to reap the rich rewards of meditation is consistency, and these suggestions below are the key ingredients for setting up a long-term, consistent practice.

1. Meditation Space:

First you need to set aside a space in your home for meditation. Having such a space will help you create the right environment to succeed in meditation. The space should be clean and if possible, used exclusively for meditation only. This way, once you enter this space, automatically your body and mind will tune in and settle down, allowing for you to travel deep within during your meditation session.

Meditation Time:

One of the most important keys in order to have a consistent practice, is to set a regular time for daily meditation. As best as possible, you should try to meditate at this time. Setting up such a time will go a long way in helping you integrate meditation into your daily life. One final note with regard to setting a regular time for meditation, is that if this can be set to early in the morning, that is preferable. During the early hours, the mind is fresh and the air it purer, both of which are helpful to meditation.

3. Meditation Tools:

You should also not be shy to use some helpful meditation tools which will ultimately help you sit better and longer. Tools such as proper attire which does not constrict blood flow and meditation cushions which take the strain off the back and knees are important parts of a daily practice and you should use them to help you in learning and mastering this wonderful spiritual art.

In addition, if you are planning to do breathing exercises or yoga as well, it is ok to use music to help motivate you during these physical practices.

During meditation though, I don’t suggest using music, so that you can develop the art of watching the mind and thoughts, which is key to advanced meditation practice.

Finally, also feel free to use a picture, incense or other such devices which inspire and help you get into the meditative mood. Meditation is a long term practice, so you will certainly run into phases where you will need some extra inspiration to keep going strong.

How to Meditate:

Once you have your space, time and tools in place, it is time to actually meditate. So let us learn how to meditate now. For this, take a nice tall posture, keeping your spine straight. You can place your hands on your knees, or place them in your lap, then follow the instructions below which will teach you a fundamental and very effective meditation technique.

* Once you take your posture, close your eyes and then remain absolutely still.

* Next bring your awareness to your breathing and begin to count your breaths from 1 to 10, with each inhalation and exhalation incrementing the count. Once you get to 10, come back to 1 and start over. So you would do 5 completes breaths to get from 1 to 10. What is important here is that you actually pay close attention to the actual sensation of the breath. It is a very physical practice, and you should concentrate of feeling the breath, as opposed to just thinking about it. So you should be aware of the depth, texture, temperature, etc of the actual air as it passes through your nostrils.

* If your mind wonders during this time, simply see your thought, let it go and return to your count. Thoughts will arise, but endeavor not to get caught in the story line, instead just see them and let them go and return your attention to your breathing.

* If you do get lost in your thinking, then again, simply see the thoughts that carried you away, let them go and return to 1, and start over. Don’t judge yourself harshly if you so get lost in thinking, it happens to everybody. In time your concentration will grow and your mind will calm down much faster, thus allowing you insight into the true nature of reality which lies beyond thoughts and duality.

How To Prepare To Meditate

There is a great deal of nonsense talked about meditation. I do not mean what it can do for you because that is difficult to prove one way or the other. I have read people saying that they discovered all sorts of things in meditation and who am I to say that they did not only because I have not had the precisely same experience.

I believe that there are numerous stages of evolution and therefore what one person experiences in one way another might experience in a entirely different way.

No, I mean that there is a great deal of rubbish talked about how one has to meditate. I am reading an article this moment by someone who says: ‘… for a successful meditation practice, everything has to be ideal ….. the room has to be set up in such a way …’ and so it goes on. The person who wrote that piece appears never to have even thought let alone ever meditated.

Meditation has always been most often practiced by people with a spiritual bent. Of those people, most people who meditated were monks, because they were seeking enlightenment and had the time and peacefulness to meditate. It was difficult to find the time or the peacefulness if you were a subsistence farmer with ten kids running about.

Anyway, lower orders of monks are not famous for living opulent lives where ‘everything … is perfect’. They live quiet lives and when they want to meditate, they will not be disturbed, no matter where they are but particularly in their cells.

My father used to drive out to a cliff top and meditate behind a bush gazing out 100 feet above the Bristol Channel. Often he did it in the middle of the night.

It is best that the people you live with understand that when you want to meditate that they must try not to make a great deal of noise and certainly not call you by name or barge into the room where you are.

How you can accomplish this in your household, you know better than I, but talking to cohabitants and hanging a sign in a prominent position can help as can always meditating at the same hour of the day, although is not usually practical. Most of us have to take our free time whilst we can.

Turn off anything that makes a noise. Turn off phones and even the door bell, if you can. Open the window, if it is not unbearably cold or raining cats and dogs. Have a shower and put on loose-fitting comfortable clothes like pyjamas.

Sit on the floor, if you can; cross-legged, if you can. If you are nearly there, try sitting on a cushion or pillow. There are things known as zafu or meditation pillows, which are small and thick.

Some are round and others are square, but a round zafu might be 12 inches in diameter and four to six inches in thickness. This is to raise you off the ground enough to take the strain off your hips and knees, if you are not used to sitting cross-legged.

It will encourage a correct posture, that is a straight back. It is also softer on the behind and when you are sitting comfortably, you may begin.

Learning To Meditate – A Simple Yet Powerful Meditation Exercise

Life these days is very demanding and stressful. If you are like most people, you  are working hard to survive and still you feel unhappy, like you don’t have enough time to get everything done, thus your life becomes stressful. Stress makes you tired and causes frustration and unhappiness. It can even affect your health. The solution comes from the spiritual world and is called meditation. A few minutes of meditation every day can drive stress away and boost your self-esteem. It can also give you a feeling of completion and fulfillment.

In this article I will give you a simple yet powerful meditation exercise in a step-by-step manner so as to understand it and apply it. Perform the exercise for 10-15 minutes a day and you will definitely find some inner peace and balance. You will also understand your own mind better.

The exercise can be performed by any logical person who seeks the truth. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Stop Distractions.
You will need to be alone in a quiet, private place. It is important to stop all distractions and make your mind clearer and more lucid. To accomplish this sit in a comfortable position (try the classic cross-legged posture, it works wonders for most people). The key is to keep your back straight. Close your eyes for a while and start breathing. Breath naturally through your nostrils. Don’t attempt to control your breath, just try to become aware of the sensation of the breath as you inhale and exhale.

Step 2: Keep the feeling
Concentrate on this breathing sensation as much as you can.

Try not to think of anything else. If you are inexperienced this will not be easy at first but the more you do it, the better you become at it! You will encounter dozens of different thoughts that aim to distract you. Don’t be tempted. Stay focused on the sensation of your breath. When you discover that your mind is following thoughts of distraction, immediately return it to the breath. Practice that as much as you can. Finally, the distracting thoughts will subside and you will encounter a feeling of peace and relaxation. Try to keep that feeling for as long as possible.

When you are done, feel refreshed and ready to face the challenges of life. Do this at least 10-15 minutes a day and notice your progress every time. Gradually, your mind will become more lucid and spacious. You will be able to reduce stress and solve your usual every day problems and issues. Other people will feel the change inside you and will start to interact better. This way your relationships will improve. This simple yet powerful meditation exercise can also do miracles in your love life especially if it is performed by both you and your soulmate.

Tips: If you want to add more magic to the meditation process you can use a candle and an incense stick. Carefully light the candle and the incense stick before you start the exercise and extinguish them when you are done. You can look at the flame of the candle while trying to send distractive thoughts away. The incense stick will fill your space with countless spirits and entities.

some people (particularly adolescent ‘emos’) with depression, believe it or not, WANT to be depressed. being depressed is one of their only forms of communication, and sympathy is felt more often than true happiness. so often, sympathy is turned into the main form of happiness in a way. subsequently, the subject tries to act depressed to get that sympathy they value so highly.
