Teen Weight Problem, Please Help.?

Question by Daniel S.: Teen Weight Problem, Please Help.?
Alright, this may be long, but please bare with me. So, I’m 14 male and turning 15 in Sept. Right now I am 215 pounds and considered obese, I am 5′ 6.5″.

Now let me get something out of the way, I HAVE tried, I AM trying. People think over weight people don’t try, well I DO. I’ve tried hypnosis (NO), jenny craig (NO), quick diets (NO), a very expensive weight loss camp (NO), sand just plain working out or swimming at my pool (<-- This works...but theres a problem:)

See, the problem with the gym is that I'll start strong and because of will power I'll slowly go less and less until I'm not going anymore for a while, then I'll restart, each time going less and less.

My body's weight is distributed kinda oddly. My face is a bit chubby and my legs and arms are okay but I carry most of the weight around my stomach, thus I have "man-breasts" or tits as the a**holes at school like to tease.

Could someone please help me? I'm literally falling apart as the months go by =*(
(Sorry, ran out of room)

In case it matters, my mom is VERY helpful. I feel bad for her because if I ask for something bad she doesn't know whether to fulfill my current wishes or be a good and say no. (Its usually either)

I take Citalopram for depression, I seem to have some 'made up' side affects of depression because of my weight (e.g. my joints will feel strange sometimes when sitting still and I'll need to stretch them constantly.)

Thanks for reading!
Thanks for the replies. I just wanted to add that I am good at eating healthy, its more of the exercise portion thats bad. I sit around all day...

The only thing you can do is set a goal for yourself and follow through. As for a diet, you might want to find an online BMR (basic metabolic rate) calculator. Figure out that number and minus five hundred. That’s how many calories you need to eat a day to lose a pound per week.

When building a habit, doing it everyday is essential. Try to workout everyday, even just 30 – 40 minutes. Attempt to incorporate exercise into your daily routine, like walking places or riding you bike.

Will therapy help? Or Hypnotherapy?

Question by Lisa E: Will therapy help? Or Hypnotherapy?
I have been struggling with my weight most of my adult life. (I was chubby when I was 12 but lost the weight in High School)..I am now 26 years old. I cannot stick to a diet. I have tried Atkins, weight watchers, weigh less, south beach, crash diets, abs diet, slimming drugs, herbalife, usn, and a lot more.

So before you judge me and think I’m useless and I eat myself into a stupor..i don’t. I am very conscious of what I eat all the time. ALL THE TIME…I eat take aways occasionally yes, and then I feel so guilty after that I’m tempted to do the one thing I have NOT tried yet and that’s putting my finger down my throat. I exercise..4 days a week. But I hate it. I’ve read self help books and I had my thyroid tested (all fine). I read up about exercising and dieting a lot so i KNOW im doing it right. So why is nothing working? I am not THAT much overweight.

I’ve posted questions on my page you can go check about weight loss and I can certainly give other ppl advice when it comes to dieting and exercising. I can count calories (but no one wants to live like that) it’s depressing. Last year I came across a book called the Gabriel Method. I read it and I was in awe..if only it was so simple as to read a book and just magically get inspired. I totally agree with everything Jon Gabriel says in his book..but he also touches on a lot of emotional stuff. I know I have baggage, and some of those issues may be the cause of why my body wants to be fat and maybe for some reason feel safer to be fat..but i have no idea how to do this soul searching and pinpointing the exact issue/s causing me to feel about myself the way I do. I hate the way I look. I am in a very loving relationship, getting married in 6 months and I’m afraid that someday my obsessiveness about my weight might drive the people closest to me away..I know it can get annoying to listen to someone whine about their weight all day long.

Would a psychologist be able to help me find these issues? Cz I have no idea where to start looking. Most of these ppl on the gabriel method talk about their own successes and how in the beginning they struggled and then after doing some soul searching and pin pointing child hood issues or even adult issues and dealing with it, the weight just started dropping off..and they kept it off for years now. So how do I know when I found the issue? and then how do i deal with it? Some of the gabriel method’s support group says that one should look back at when you started gaining weight and figure out what happened to cause it, what was my life like..and honestly i cant remember..I really cant. the only thing I know is I lost 15kg’s when my fiance was overseas for work 2 years ago (lost it in 4 months because I couldnt eat, I was majorly depro because he was away) and after he got back, I just started gaining again and i don’t know why. Sure my eating habits fluctuated but when he was away I still ate, I just didn’t have a big appetite. I still don’t but back then it was bad..I ate maybe once a day. Drank a smoothie in the morning and skipped lunch and then ate dinner, usually something ridiculous like a slice of toast. when the weight started dropping I started thinking maybe this is the perfect opportunity to lose weight and surprise my fiance..(not that he EVER told me I should lose weight, I was heavier than I am now when we met and fell inlove with me like that)..but i wanted to look good and feel good and so I made the best of my depression and threw in some Tae bo 5 days a week and actually ended up enjoying it. Now I hate exercise. Dont know why..i just do.

But I still force myself to go to gym 4 days a week and nothing seems to be working. I really don’t eat a lot so I am starting to wonder if my weight issues and my self esteem issues are connected to some emotional trauma or incident. I can’t figure out why and I’m starting to lose it. I really am. The other day my mother-in-law-to be tagged me in a photo on Facebook and the way the picture was taken I looked pregnant! I hate the way I look..And trust me I’ve tried to be positive and motivating myself…but it never lasts :( i’m getting married in 6 months and I want to look good for my wedding SO badly. Please if ANYONE has some advice or if someone can tell me if a psychologist will be able to help me or maybe a hypnotherapist? i am truly at my wits end

Answer by Skeptic
It took me 20 years of trying every approach in the world until finally I discovered a book by Dr. Dean Ornish “Eat More, Weigh Less” and learned that I could lose weight without a therapist, hypnotherapist, or weight loss clinic, or spending thousands of dollars on a medically supervised weight loss program.. ( These didn’t work for me, and according to Gina Kolata, medically supervised diets, calorie restricted diets, Atkins, and other commercial programs are ineffective in the long-run). I lost 80+ pounds over the past three years without much effort thanks to a low-fat, whole plant based diet endorsed by some of the most respected nutritional researchers in the country.

help for alcohol problems other than aa?

Question by sherman supporter: help for alcohol problems other than aa?
so i have a close friend who has tried aa (alcoholics anonymous) a few times and doesn’t like it.
a-it’s like a cult that takes over ur life. they require u to go to meetings daily. have a sponsor who mentors ur life and life decisions for u.
b-there is a need to believe in a higher power or god. daily prayer and meditation is part of the program.
c-bad for ur self respect. u must state that u are powerless over alcohol and other things. u must admit to having character defects.
d-the people are shady and all seem to have problems which require professional help. it is like the blind leading the blind.
e-spending the rest of ur life totally abstinent from alcohol is not realistic or desirable in our society/culture.

1. what are some other methods of obtaining help for alcohol problems?
2. is it possible for someone to learn to use self control and drink without negative consequences once they’ve had an alcohol problem?

Can hypnotherapy help relieve the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder?

Question by Diane M: Can hypnotherapy help relieve the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder?
I read an article written by a hypnotist. He stated that he was surprised to find that people with mental illnesses did not turn to hypnotherapy. He then spoke about how he treated a borderline with very good results. I have borderline personality disorder and am also in a failing relationship with my current boyfriend. I have tried a lot of different therapist including some that practiced DBT with some success. I contacted a hypnotherapist and am going to make an appointment. These are some things that I hope to get out of treatment:
1) More controlled emotions
2) Higher self esteem
3) An end to my paranoid thoughts
4) To become strong enough to leave my boyfriend/lessen my obsession with him/become independent

I know that this is a lot to ask but I heard that hypnotherapy is very effective. I would especially like help in becoming more independent…having this disorder makes it difficult to live on my own….My boyfriend has become verbally abusive so it is important that I muster up the strength to leave him once and for all. (sorry this is so long!)

I think you are wasting your money on hypno-therapy. I doubt its effectiveness for any mental illness. Stay with your current therapist.

Need Porn Addiction Help?

Question by rak: Need Porn Addiction Help?
So I have been trying to quit pornography and masturbation for about 7 months now and had some success. But I cannot go without it like forever. I need to be at least 3 months clean in order to be 100% free from this addiction.

So, I have tried many things such as installing a porn blocker (K9) and giving the unknown password to my friend (Unfortunately, I have find ways to get around the blocker which always make me relapse). Limiting the use of my lap top then running/walking everyday, meditation everyday, exercise every other day etc to name a few. These things have worked in the past but I haven’t been able to reach the final goal which is 90 days without P and M.

So my question is what else can I do in order to make sure that I do not relapse. It feels horrible after each relapse. Has anyone every recovered from this strong addiction? If you have, what tactics did you use? My god, I never knew that my brain was so dependent on P and M to this point. This addiction is as strong as any drug addiction out there. Any tips, advice, suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.
I cannot have sex for at least 90 days and until I get rid of this addiction otherwise there is always a fear of binging to porn.

find a woman and f*%k her. That should conquer your addiction.

Breath Meditation: Some of the many ways in which breath meditation may help you enhance your general well being

Article by Dr. Robert Puff, Ph.D.

Now I’d like to share with you my favorite form of meditation, called “breath meditation.” I believe it is one of the most powerful, yet one of the easiest, meditations to learn.

Before we begin, let’s talk a bit about the mind. The mind is made up of wave patterns. When we think, it causes wave patterns to occur in the brain. There are four main types of brain waves. The pattern we are normally in when awake and thinking is called “beta wave” or “beta state.” When we are dropping off to sleep and the mind begins to quiet, that is “alpha state.” When we are asleep or quietly meditating, that is “theta state.” The deepest state of sleep or of meditation (where there is no body awareness) is called “delta state.”

The goal in meditation is to get you to the theta/delta stage. I have found that the breath meditation technique is one of the most effective ways to get to the deeper levels of meditation and still the mind. Most people who are new to meditation and are trying a variety of ways to meditate will vacillate between the beta and alpha states in their initial practice. These stages of meditation are relaxing and a wonderful experience, but as with all things in life, the more you practice, the better you will get. Eventually you will desire to quiet the mind at the theta/delta levels and will go to the deeper realms of meditation to achieve this stage.

Now let’s talk about this effective and helpful way to quiet the mind, called “breath meditation.” It can also be the most challenging way, because although it’s simplistic, it is not always easy to do. It is easy to learn but sometimes difficult to practice.

In this form of meditation, you simply “follow your breath.” Just observe your breathing with no mantra, no prayer word, just simple and quiet noticing of the breath. How it works is that you sit up straight in a quiet, comfortable place with your feet on the floor or legs crossed. As you sit there, watch or take notice of your breath. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, and breathe out. You can breathe in through your mouth or your nose, it doesn’t’ matter. The only thing that matters is paying attention to your breath.

If something distracts you, simply come back to your breathing. When strenuous or uncomfortable thoughts arise (come to the surface), don’t try to ignore them or push them away but instead acknowledge them and go back to observing your breathing. Allow your attention to focus on that. Acknowledge any distractions, without being annoyed by them, and simply direct your awareness back to your breath. Eventually, thoughts will diminish, your mind will get quiet, and your brain patterns will begin to be at those deeper levels. You will find a deep peace that you may have never experienced before. Stresses will dissolve, and a sense of well-being will envelop you.

I encourage you to try the breath meditation and to practice it often. I also strongly suggest you meditate twice a day, once first thing in the morning and again just before bed at night. I find these times to be the easiest to make into a habit. We can meditate any time of the day or night, but it’s best to make a point of doing it twice daily and to establish a routine of morning and evening meditation. A sense of peace will develop in your life with regular practice. In my experience, breath meditation is one of the most powerful meditations in the universe.
